The two I've read are A House for Mr Biswas and A Bend in the River, both amazing books, my recommendation would be start with Biswas.

Came across some of WBE Du Bois's staggering visualisations of data at the Stedelijk over the summer - incredible body of work (and absent from a lot of the standard accounts of the dev of data viz)
