It lays like a shroud over the storm-ravaged fields, shielding from discovery the body of Finarfin Noldor, bloated and bloody, where it lays at the center of the mire. For as little as they've seen their neighbors in recent weeks, one might wonder if the entire farm had somehow slipped into limbo. Not even Amarië has shown her face since Orry disappeared. Under the cover of this eerie gray dawn, Galadriel slips from the barn and creeps back to the farmhouse, clutching the tattered remains of her shift around her body. Willing herself to move as silently as a wraith, to blend with the mists around her, passing invisibly across the yard until she is safe within her room.

Galadriel’s learning some new tricks.

Ironically I’ve been reading a lot of a revelations lately as I chug along on these last two chapters of meet me at the edge.

She wonders what kind of welcome she'll find back on the Noldor homestead now that she has the preacher in tow? From her mother and the twins? From Halbrand? A few minutes later Celeborn draws up alongside her. He's kept pace better than Galadriel anticipated, but the frantic ride from town has left both man and horse worse for the wear. Wordlessly she passes him the canteen Halbrand had packed for her that morning. "Thank you," Celeborn says, still panting for breath after gulping down the last of the water. He hands her back the empty canteen. "You ride like the devil's on your tail." A harsh, bark of laughter bursts from her unexpectedly. Celeborn tries to join, but his chuckle is awkward and uneasy. "Metaphorically, I mean." Ëarwen's parting words from the morning come to mind. Come hither, indeed. Without thinking Galadriel continues the verse. "So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns." "Revelations?" Galadriel turns to consider the preacher. The blazing afternoon sun has bleached his silver blonde hair of any luster, his face is sweaty and sunburned, he has to squint against the light. He doesn't belong out here. Light blue text on a dark green background that reads: "I've told you before, Father, life out here is different from in town. It hardens folks. But I think that leaves their edges a bit sharper when they break." "Galadriel, please tell me what happened. I want to help, but I can't if I'm in the dark." "The twins found papa's body out in the fields this morning, after mama sent them to look for him when he didn't show up for breakfast. She came unraveled at the news. Lashed out at us. Aegnor was hurt. Burned, badly I think, though I never got a chance to look at his injuries. Halbrand intervened—" Celeborn makes a noise of displeasure. "Father, you weren't there. He probably kept me from doing something I would have regretted." Galadriel pauses. She can feel Celeborn's gaze focused upon her, his attention wound tightly between her fingers like the string of a cat's cradle. With the slightest tug she could pull him in whatever direction she desires. “My mama, she's… She's not right. Hasn't been right for a while if I'm being honest. But lately she's been saying things… I'm worried she might even be seeing things.” He frowns. “I don’t think I follow.” She reaches out to settle her hand over his again, feels his fingers twitch beneath hers. Fixing his gaze with her own, she watches as his eyes slowly relax from their squint, as though the sun has dimmed. “Things that aren’t there, Celeborn.”

Before she’s even made it down the back steps, an arm darts out to wrap around her waist, swiftly tugging her down into the shadows alongside the house where Halbrand has been lying in wait. Deftly he spins her into his embrace, crowding her against the wall by the back door until she is caught between him and the rough boards. “I’ve been waiting to get my hands on you all day,” he murmurs, dipping his head to claim a kiss. A large hand cups her throat, angling her face back so he can deepen the kiss. Calloused fingers brush softly against her skin. Her lips part easily when he pushes his thumb just so against the hinge of her jaw. His tongue slides against hers in a slick caress. White text on a black background that reads: The naked hunger in his embrace startles her at first, before it sparks an answering hunger in her own belly. Old cotton, hair, skin, Galadriel digs her fingers into whatever of Halbrand she can grasp hold of, dragging him closer until he has her pinned to the farmhouse wall. “I was just coming to find you,” she gasps when their lips finally part. “Were you now?” Halbrand presses open-mouthed kisses along her jaw and down the side of her neck while his hands make quick work of the buttons of her dress, revealing more and more of her throat as he goes. “Did you miss me?”

Revisiting my #Haladriel You’ve Got Mail/Shop Around the Corner AU for a change of pace.

The elastic band keeping it on her head cut into her chin and cheeks adorably, pushing them out just a little, just enough to exaggerate the already petulant cast if her expression. Halbrand had to bite back a smirk. “I’m shopping.” “Go away,” she huffed. Behind him the door to the shop opened, a little girl and her mother, he guessed, coming in from the cold, pink cheeked and bright eyed with excitement. “High Ms. Galadriel!” the little girl called out, waving enthusiastically. Galadriel’s entire demeanor changed, the icy facade she reserved for him melting away to reveal a warmth he’d only ever been able to witness from the periphery. “Hi Anna!” She returned the little girl’s wave. Black background with white text that reads: “You know, I too, am a paying customer,” he muttered. Her smile dropped immediately in as she turned back to him. “You’re not a customer. At best, you’re a nuisance. At worst, you’re a saboteur.” “A saboteur? You make me sound so worldly and sophisticated. Maybe even a little dangerous.” Halbrand leaned against the counter and waggled his eyebrows. “Go. Away.” “Ok, but can you ring these up for me first?” He plopped a stack of books down on the counter with a grin. “No.” “You’re really not going to take my money? Isn’t your business in trouble or something?” “God, you are such an ass—” Before she’d even finished insulting him a chorus of gasps broke out around the store. “—hole.” The look on her face was one of wide-eyed horror as nearby aomebody giggled. Halbrand didn’t even bother trying to conceal Black background with white text that reads: the feral quality to his smile then. A predator scenting blood on the air. “You need to put a dollar in the swear jar, Ms. Galadriel,” a little voice said. “Yeah, Ms. Galadriel, put a dollar in the swear jar,” he echoed, entirely too delighted by her embarrassment. He nudged the little glass jar she kept on the counter as a deterrent against bad language towards her. The shop was silent as everyone waited for her to react. After a beat, she flashed a wide, sheepish grin to her customers. “Sorry everyone, you’re right.” Her eyes snapped back to Halbrand, resuming their death glare as she fished her purse from beneath the counter. She pulled a crumpled dollar from within and held it up for everyone to see, before tucking it in the jar. “Happy?” she muttered. “Oh very. I’d be happier if you rang up these books now, though,” he replied, sliding them forward across the counter.
