Our leaders must treat gun violence as a human issue, not as a partisan issue one. They owe this to the families who grieve tonight, to the young people who deserve schools free of fear, and to the memory of those we have lost.

They’ve hid behind and contributed to partisan gridlock in Washington, blocking common sense solutions that could save lives and keep our communities safe. The gun violence epidemic now claims the lives of more than 40,000 Americans every year.

The tragic reality is that gun violence spares no one. For years, too many national voices have weaponized fear, normalized extremism and poisoned the well of our discourse.

No child or family should ever have to live in fear because of gun violence. Yet, our children continue to bear the brunt of a crisis that far too many have come to accept as normal. We cannot accept a world where students, educators, and families carry this burden.

A principled statement will be forthcoming and we will take a stand to address our concerns with the DNC fully.

Therefore, we are working with internal partners to address the discord among DNC membership and our concerns more directly to those who find themselves at odds with the humanitarian crisis occurring in the region.

While we have hope that Chair Ken Martin’s Taskforce will come together expeditiously, we are unaware of any timeframe which is a dire concern.
