I think non-artists think the final product is all that matters. Like the process is enjoyable too. Growing and learning from your mistakes so that you eventually have something you like. It's hard to explain to them the sense of accomplishment you get after spending the time on a piece.

My klon clone is a JHS notaklon. Their $99 pedals are honestly a really good deal. I've heard good things about the Holy Grail and TC electronics Hall of Fame 2. They're all good options!

It's not the sexiest pedal but I'm a big fan of my Boss RV-6. I almost always have it on with the spring setting. Love a good reverb
