And that's exactly how you control the pace of your writing.
By asking yourself: "Hm... if I do it like this, will the pacing quicken or slow down?", you end up being able to better control pacing.

If you want to keep the reader engaged, keep putting hooks throughout your writing.
My personal way of doing it when I'm writing stuff is to add a small detail at first, that later gets expanded.
The caveats are, if you want to properly reward the reader, you gotta answer the lead eventually.
