In theory, workers are supposed to check any substitute on their account is legally allowed to work. As far as I could see, the whole idea of the "gig economy" was a ruse to wind back the clock on hard won employment rights, motivated to maximize profits.

Carole, I did 500+ orders for Deliveroo, Uber Eats etc. 2018-2020. Surprisingly, the workers being able to use a "substitute" on their account is a key part of the legal rationale why the workers aren't classed as employees - paying NIC etc.
