I think any old sketch pad is good! It kind of just depends on what he wants to do, if he wants to paint and draw in a sketch pad I’d suggest a multimedia sketch pad. Micron pens are also great for inking. For pencils I’d say to just get any decent set of graphite pencils 🫡 hope this helps
