When Trump attacks the legal system itself, the Times will complain, but it can’t engage politically with that complaint. That is left as an exercise for the reader. The tone of the New York Times is ultimately more important than its values.

That’s why NYT both decries Trump and yet tries to gin up cases of Democrats breaking the same norms. That’s an idiotic political tactic, but institutionalism is trying to not be political, to carve out a set of ideals and practices that transcend politics.

It’s a bizarre situation where the aesthetics of institutionalism clash with its goals. To fight back against Trump would require a demand for action, but “objective” reporting demands quietly backing the status quo and criticizing change across the aisle.
