I feel this! I ran out of tissues this week and needed to restock (an indication of the high stress of the moment). And you’re right, the issues are personal yet structural, and it can feel overwhelming to see that.

It means the world that they come to me, & share w me. Truly. I see it as one of my most cherished roles.
And still, I think about this care work that so many of us do, that is so often invisible & unspoken, so disproportionately distributed, but also so incredibly heavy & important.

I am so deeply concerned about the implications of our findings for aging adults in the current political climate, where legal violence is so blatant, so intense, & so incredibly widespread.

We argue that, like episodes of physical violence that can leave lacerations & damage—both visible and more concealed—our results provide evidence of the health harms of state-sanctioned violence: what we call bodily scars of legal violence.

Using 3-way FE models, we find that as county-level enforcement intensified & states passed increasing numbers of restrictive immigrant policies, older immigrants—especially older Latinx immigrants—experienced accelerated physiological & physical decline.

In this paper, we link longitudinal county-level data on enforcement & data on state immigrant policies to longitudinal Health & Retirement Study data to consider how these changes in the sociopolitical landscape have patterned physiological & physical health inequities among older adults in the US.

Immigration enforcement rates skyrocketed in recent yrs, & state legislators have passed thousands of anti-immigrant policies. @cecimenjivar.bsky.social & @abregoleisy.bsky.social used the term legal violence to describe the damaging nature of these policies & practices & the violence they create.

Oh, the feeling is mutual, Atheen! There are these turning points in our careers that shape our paths in immeasurable ways, and working with you has been one of those inflection points for me. It’s made my work better (and more fun)!
