Tons of people have been singing the praises of the new Risk of Rain 2 DLC. I'm in a pattern of having a lot of negative things to say about games, but I just can't see how this is the best DLC that Risk of Rain 2 has gotten.

Risk of Rain 2: Alloyed Collective isn’t a Buggy Mess, but it’s not Great
Sure, the new Risk of Rain DLC isn’t terrible and buggy. But does it really deserve so much praise?

A thought's been creeping into my head that a lot of indie developers are getting over their heads about the whole Steam early access deal.

More and more unpolished, barely developed games keep hitting the store. This is just one of them.

Jump Space is Space Simulation Done Right … but it’s in Early Access
Jump Space is yet another indie title that’s released into early access well before it has the right.

I usually love Giant Squid's work, but I found Sword of the Sea to be a little lackluster. More importantly, I wanted to talk about the game's positioning in the market and its drawbacks as a product.

Matt Nava’s “Sword of the Sea” is Beautiful, but Horribly Performant
A beautiful game that’s been caught up in Unreal Engine’s optimization issues.

I'm really only a fan of remakes and remasters when they help expand the audience who has access to the product. But I'm also noticing a lot of trade offs that happen when you redesign a game for a larger audience. Here's my ramblings:

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne is Great Case for Games Preservation
With all these classic games getting remakes and remasters, let’s ask ourselves: What are we losing in the process?

Been MIA for a while. I've been taking a detour to focus on myself and figure out some things in my life. This article is just a small glimpse into what's been going on.

I've been working on a lot of creative writing stuff recently. Trying to publish more things this year, and hoping to turn up the output of my creative work on Medium over the next few months.

I'm usually pretty late to the punch when playing new games. But, because of the nature of playing and researching games, I often find that they're best experienced on my terms. Until Then is no different, and has made a splash on my life in recent times.

My New Year's resolution for 2024 was to begin writing my own creative work. There's not enough of myself that goes into games analysis. While I wrote a ton over of creative stuff over 2024, this is the first thing I'm publishing in 2025:

This year flew by. There were ups and downs, but the world it spun round and round. Just like last year I'm keeping my New Year's resolutions small but attainable. I feel optimistic for 2025.

I've been thinking about fishing games recently and how they largely share the same formula: You cast your rod, sit and wait, and then play a little game to reel them in. Perhaps we could set our sights on something more than that.

Fishing Games Are Awesome, Why Aren’t There More?
Fishing is found in seemingly every game we play, but not everyone is a fan. Perhaps we could change that.

A while back I released a video about fourth wall breaks in video games. This is groundbreaking research into how we can utilize the fourth wall as a narrative tool in videogames, rather than something to joke about.

I played Echo Point Nova a while back because it advertised itself as a movement shooter. In reality what I got was an open world game blanketed by movement shooter mechanics.

Movement Shooters, Open Worlds, Echo Point Nova
Movement shooters are a fairly unpopular genre, but Echo Point Nova’s is trying to be a lot more.

We're giving this Bluesky thing a shot because Twitter/X is borderline unusable. I really tried to overlook its flaws but it feels like that site simultaneously downgraded its servers and then smashed them in with a fire axe.
