Absolutely, the nice thing is that you can have a play about in the live installers and see what distro takes your fancy. There are so many different distros around now all with different specialities, there's kind of something for everyone.

It can be slightly sketchy at times in regards to some drivers (GPU mainly), but I've found that swapping the boot drive between machines works alot better than it used to.

And 6: do you really need to buy new? Or would you be perfectly happy with something used like an older ThinkPad?
