Whether he’s the right man remains to be seen, but the move away from the stifling parochiality of Wilder and his sycophantic fan club is much to be welcomed. Football matches are won by quality, not locality.

‘Better than Wilder’ is not a high bar. Being a Blade and thumping the badge are not quality marks or performance indicators. Other clubs seem to manage without it and without him. There will be no queue, of clubs of any stature, for his services. We need a modern, progressive coach.

I profoundly agree with your ‘not Dyche’ stance. I think Edwards may be Boro bound. It would be negligent not to at least ask about Rosenior. You never know. We simply must be an attractive prospect for a young managerial talent with PL aspirations.

On this occasion I would Al. I saw every game and the results masked mainly poor performances. His sterile, negative tactics cost us on a number of occasions, notably at Wembley where yet again he played on the retreat. He’s not as universally popular amongst Blades as it might appear.

Might it not be untenable now? He’ll know that he’s on borrowed time and constant scrutiny, won’t he? He certainly wouldn’t be my long term plan. We need to move away from our stifling corner shop mentality, of which Wilder is a central and, in my view, divisive part.
