Because he grew up without pretty much anyone in his life, Clay is very clingy, both figuratively and literally. If you show him enough affection he will literally cling onto you like an octopus.

Like I said before, Clay is biologically mostly octopus, meaning he can squeeze into pretty much anything as the only real solid parts are in his head, and he will absolutely use this to spook whoever he feels like by popping out of whatever they're opening.

Anyways, Clay grew up in the Australian waters pretty much all alone since his mother died shortly after he was born and his father was gone most of the time, visiting him here and there.

You can't see it in this image because it's a very recent addition, but Clay has octopus eyes instead of more normal looking eyes. Due to this, he often has a hard time with eye contact as most people find him off putting.

As someone who grew up distant from society, Clay is fascinated by movies, though hates going to actual theaters due to how messy the floors are.

Clay is Australian, though only really in birth and not culturally as he pretty much exclusively grew up in the ocean.

As you can probably tell, Clay is part blue ringed octopus (well actually mostly octopus) and does have venom like one. This, combined with the fact that you probably don't see aquatic hybrids much, cause a lot of people to steer clear of him.
