Maybe these "primitive" coding sessions are actually the mental equivalent of resistance training - ensuring we maintain the cognitive strength to tackle problems that fall outside AI's capabilities, and a necessary step towards becoming a “Centaur”?

The most successful AI users in the HBS study were either "Centaurs" (strategically dividing work with AI) or "Cyborgs" (fully integrating AI into workflow) - but both styles require strong independent thinking skills.

Similarly, researchers examining ChatGPT's impact warn about "cognitive offloading" - where outsourcing our thinking to AI could gradually diminish our critical thinking abilities and memory.

A Harvard Business School study with BCG consultants revealed an interesting "jagged technological frontier" where AI excels at some tasks but struggles with others. When consultants relied on AI for problems beyond its capabilities, they performed 19% worse than those working independently.

I see this as a workout session for knowledge workers of the future. As we should not skip leg days in the gym, we should also not skip no-AI code sessions in our IDE. These "cognitive workouts" might be crucial for maintaining our problem-solving muscles.
