Now, as it turned out, the Rebellion was achieved much earlier and more easily than anyone had expected. In past years Mr. Jones, although a hard master, had been a capable farmer, but of late he had fallen on evil days. He had become much disheartened after losing money in a lawsuit, and had taken to drinking more than was good for him. For whole days at a time he would lounge in his Windsor chair in the kitchen, reading the newspapers, drinking, and occasionally feeding Moses on crusts of bread soaked in beer. His men were idle and dishonest, the fields were full of weeds, the buildings wanted roofing, the hedges were neglected, and the animals were underfed.

BBC SCANDAL Since the Telegraph’s bombshell report last week that revealed that a Donald Trump speech had been selectively edited by Panorama, the organisation has been under huge pressure over its impartiality standards, finally leading to last night’s resignation by BBC Director General Tim Davie. I know and like Tim but what none of us understand is why the BBC took so long to take action over something that was so obviously a breach of its rules. What’s so sad is that we really do need a strong BBC. In my book Can we be Great Again? I argue that the BBC has a vital role in combatting fake news as one of the world’s most trusted news sources, something Craig Oliver talked about on the Today programme this morning. There is clearly a long way to go…

Some BBC figures point to an effort to shift the corporation politically, dating back to Boris Johnson’s time in government. The Guardian has been told Prescott’s appointment as an external adviser had been pushed by the BBC board member Robbie Gibb, Theresa May’s former communications chief who helped set up the rightwing broadcaster GB News. Gibb was first placed on the BBC board during Johnson’s time in government. Gibb and Prescott have previously been reported as being friends. Gibb was on a four-person interview panel that appointed Prescott. Johnson has told the Guardian that any suggestion of an attempt to undermine the BBC was “complete and utter bollocks”. Prescott said in his letter that his criticisms “do not come with any political agenda”.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is investigating the vet sector, which is 60% owned by six large companies that are backed mainly by private equity firms. It is looking into concerns about corporations buying hundreds of independent vet practices, pushing up prices and making excessive profits.

Note from someone who doesn't vote Reform but who does, nevertheless, exist:
- Resisting the temptation to sound like Boris Johnson is a good strategy
- Popping up in Guardian to patronise friends you haven't called for ages is just annoying
- Implying rest of us are the problem is a bit desperate

Here in Surrey (which has definite, quite severe pockets of deprivation but is classed as 'wealthy' overall), with local unitary elections next year, it's looking like a Lib Dem/ Reform two-horse race. This is comfortable (relatively speaking, from a national perspective) Godalming last week 👇

PEACE IN OUR TIME Finally, after two years, the remaining hostages held in Gaza have been released. There is still a long way to go but it is a moment of hope – and we are all praying it lasts. It also shows how impossible it is to define Donald Trump in one word: one can despair of his cosying up to dictators, flawed policy on tariffs or undermining of the separation of powers…but also forcing Israel and Hamas into a peace deal, getting Europe to spend more on defence and reducing illegal migration by 90%. For those who dislike him or disparage him as ‘populist,’ I would advise learning to communicate as effectively as he does – the TV and social media of a 79 year old American puts most younger politicians to shame.

We thought the democratic norms would be passed from generation like a baton. They haven't been, we don't have a type of thinking, active rather than passive, culture or cultivation to have maintained them; we had, but we lost it. We are going fast towards hard-right authoritarianism; the USA is already there and a yet-undetermined proportion of the west is following. My Spanish family grew up in right-wing authoritarian times. It was like this: no political involvement of any sort unless it's pro-regime; it was a good idea in much of the country to be religious and attend services; you roughly did what authority told you unquestioningly and you just hoped upon hope that you would never be in a position where you crossed the unforgiving parts of the regime. Reading material was stringently restricted. Liberties such as sexual freedom and freedom of speech were simply not done unless you were rich or wealth-off. Travelling abroad was for the well-off; you were eternally grateful for tender mercies. There was little or no social security. People were regularly executed. Racism and appalling sexism were not only rife, it was the way to do things. And national service for all males. You kept your head down in a way none of us can now imagine. You rarely saw money in your pockets apart from a little for the mere basics. Fancy all or some of that ? If so, keep voting for MAGA, Reform and their offshoots. They'll assure you it won't be like any of that, but just wait and see. We have something beautiful in the west but we are yawning at it and simply want an undetermined Something Else. We are going to get SE and there will be NO way back. A pop-up shiny socio-economic menu with nice choices will not be there, ever.
