Any other writers out there with aphantasia? Curious how other folks are getting good descriptions in their work despite not being able to actually visualize it. Would love to discuss strategies!

Live your life in such a way that things like "NO ONE MOURNS THE WICKED" and "PLEASE LET IT BE TRUE" don't trend on social media when you vanish for a few days.

…the basement stretching into a cavern of ribs and stone, the walls slick and pulsing like a living thing. Below, not darkness but a shifting reflection - my own face in countless forms, whispering choices I haven’t made. Lives I abandoned, futures that were not mine to exist in.

Q4. Go on. Get in the basement and tell me what you can see. You know you want to!

Tough question! I think a window fits my style more - having the illusion of safety behind the pane, but it’s a border that can break and expose you to “the outside.”

However, horror is often a lens with which we can examine ourselves and society as a whole, much like a mirror.

#HorrorWritersChat
Well then #HorrorWritersChat, what of this? I am absolutely not going near mirrors. But what about you...?
August 20, 2025 at 8:46 PM
I would say “domestic betrayal” - my themes are things like survival, resilience, and horror from the outside in: aliens, parasitism, collapse, starvation, uncanny biology. I don’t often delve into things like family drama, the lover who sabotages you, etc.; Something to improve!

#HorrorWritersChat
It's a thing, no? The Bluebeard room, the closet, the hidden cellar, the space that you never look at. What's yours #HorrorWritersChat writers?

February dusk;
the mirror fogs, yet I see
myself still smiling.
The silence grows heavier,
and I forget who I was.

Working on my first, which was supposed to be a one-and-done but has morphed into a 3-5 part series, and I have three other WIP ideas to do afterwards 😅

We stayed up to watch the Perseids.

The streaks came, brighter than ever; too bright, white hot.

By dawn, every crater in the yard was still smoking, and the things inside them had already learned our names.

Question 4 (last Q but stick around for the outro):

Finish this sentence by writing a one-post short story or poem.

“We stayed up to watch The Perseids” (that's a meteor shower)

Introduce your current WIP in the form of a breaking news headline (10 words or fewer)

A lobotomy perhaps? Alien abduction? I think my brain just defaults to spooky and weird, so I don’t see myself switching genres. Although I do have an idea for a parody horror/romance… 👀

Question 2:

18th August is "International Never Give Up Day". What could make you give up writing horror? (Feel free to be silly or inventive)

Most unusual inspiration for me is definitely late 80s early 90s children’s movies lmao, some of that stuff was traumatizing! Secret of NIMH, Rockadoodle, Brave Little Toaster, Dark Crystal, Return to Oz, Neverending Story… so many films that gave me and my friends nightmares!

#HorrorWritersChat
Question 1:

Introduce yourself: Tell us who you are, what you write, and the most unusual place you've found inspiration for a horror work.

He woke up in a lounge chair, dry mouth, no ID, and no ocean in sight. Just a cornfield. This “cruise ship” is landlocked, rusted, and crawling with staff in 70s resort wear who never blink.

The moon’s too close. The coughing is getting wet. Something in the pool is breathing.

#HorrorWritersChat Question 4: I'd like to speak to the manager please, I ordered a pizza half an hour ago and it hasn't arrived. Oh no, I'm still typing in the wrong window. The final question is below. Oh, and Merry Christmas.

Beady eyes, rotting feathers. The undead hens swarm the garden, pecking holes in my fruit. I lure them with seeds and tofu scraps, guiding them into a shed with Bach on a Bluetooth speaker. Then I lock the door, nail it shut, and whisper “May your souls find peace… and compost.”

It’s not a who, it’s you.

Or at least, it looks like you; same clothes, same scar on the chin, but the smile is wrong. Too wide. Too still.

It, (you), knocks again, even though your fists are clenched at your sides.

It wants in.

Because it was never supposed to be locked out.

#HorrorWritersChat Question 2: Hi. I'd like to order a pizza. What'd you mean you're out of pizza? Oh, sorry, I'm typing in the wrong window. Please answer the question below.

Hello!

I write sci-fi & adventure flavored horror because otherwise my brain keeps my story ideas on repeat. I need to write so I can have peace of mind!

As for the 1980s creature, remember that part of The Thing where dude’s head turns into a spider with eye stalks? That one.

Read a recent #archaeology article about #tattoos discovered on a 2500 y/o ice mummy and an artist reproduced one. I’m almost tempted to get something similar! The tattoo depicts tigers and a leopard hunting elk or caribou. The amount of detail from bone needles and plant ash is incredible! #history

Gnarliest thing about my book is probably that it opens with the end of the world, and that’s just a thematic backdrop for the more harrowing events in the story to come.

I’m still new to “the scene” so I’m not quite sure what counts as indie or not but I recently enjoyed Dead Silence by SA Barnes (Stacey Kade). We like a little trauma mixed into our space adventures! 😈

Many of the friendships in my book come from a place of characters complementing each other’s weaknesses and finding strength in unlikely alliances, usually after being the thrown together in some way by the events of the story. Wildest pairing? Expert sniper & retired mortician.
