And this is what we're looking for on Mars: layered rock structure that might have formed in this process. We won't know for sure until we've collected the samples left on the surface by rovers tho.

Stromatolites are sedimentary formations created by microorganisms that produce... glue, or, to be more exact, adhesive compounds that cement minerals, sand, and other materials to create microbial mats that, over time, solidify into rock.

For example, we may decide to look for the combination of methane and oxygen (think cows but also decaying matter) or water and ozone, fossils, nucleic acids, proteins, or stromatolites. Enter Mars exploration!
