We argue that 4-year-olds tend to use a "bigger-area" heuristic, focusing on the total space covered by the target & context circles. This explains their accuracy in some cases but struggle when helpful cues are added. Meanwhile, older children & adolescents fall for the illusion more easily.

This study explored how children use visual cues to navigate illusions, like the Ebbinghaus illusion (where circles appear different sizes due to surrounding context). Context sensitivity increases with age, influencing perception!
However, the youngest children were not sensitive to context.
