there is a certain (mostly) 70s-era album art aesthetic that essentially guarantees that I will purchase the vinyl, and it looks like this

i went all the way to #asle2025 in Maryland just so i could find the greatest box in history at a gas station in Ohio

I've presented at the National Humanities Conference: my very dangerous and un-American work organizing a downtown scavenger hunt about circus history. Other work included community-building programs for veterans and exciting new ideas for neglected historical sites...

for all the reasons to be mad at g**gle about AI and tracking and adsense and everything else, I do love the suggestion that deep in the hidden wasteland of the internet where no information lives there is not an endless howling void but actually this little ice fishing guy, the backbone of it all

Introduce yourself with four video games

Dark Souls is an immaculate puzzle box
Dwarf Fortress is an improbably gigantic sandbox of chaos
Trackmania Turbo does not care about how roads work
Oikospiel Book 1 is a dog opera. Hylics would have also fit here

are we SURE that the whole "AI" thing isn't just a case of Clippy going Inigo Montoya on us

it is so hard for me when this happens. like I keep trying to convince myself that the music actually delivers on the promise of the art somehow and it's just so disappointing. with that said, though Anderson's Olias of Sunhillow definitely delivers on the album art, which is top notch
December 3, 2024 at 2:50 PM
here, incidentally, is When the Star Kings Die. as with many of these that i pick up for the art i honestly have not read the book, but wow is there a lot going on here
December 1, 2024 at 4:01 AM
so I collect sci fi paperbacks for cover art, and I lucked into this version of Le Guin by Alex Ebel, who did other Le Guin covers along with John Jakes' When the Star Kings Die. It's interesting how the cover reinforces a binary reading of the Gethenians while heavily emphasizing the climate.

when this little guy shows up, you know you're in for pain, but only the best kind. Will my increasingly sensitive digestion absolutely despise me later? Doesn't matter; Hochi, I cannot resist your charms

Can't stop thinking about the cosmology implied by the existence of Christmas in Whoville. Do the Whos have a Jesus Who, because all worlds have a fall/redemption cycle, a la C. S. Lewis's Perelandra? Do they worship Horton, who repeatedly sacrifices himself for their benefit? WHO IS THE WHO GOD

Hey! So chances are you are not local to me, but if you somehow are, you should totally check out this awesome event at our one-and-only nonprofit bookstore and community organizing space. Redbud is the only store in town with a "critical universities studies" section AND a cookbook section :)
