Making this graph was "me-search"--I wanted to understand why things felt so HARD for me when I was on the tenure track and had a new baby. Money was tight and so being urged to spend it to make time felt like gaslighting! I was teaching extra to make *money*!! (the opposite conversion).

Which is women getting pushed into the labor force by the bottom falling out of the marriage economy, via easier divorce, without a true change in underlying gender roles or attitudes. So what's "The Squeeze"? It's a period in life when time any money pressures hit at the same time for women.

This is the first graph from the book, which shows that the increase in work hours for women and decrease in housework time (bc of time-saving technology) exactly offset each other. But that increase in childcare time? Unaccounted for. We spend twice as much time with our kids as a generation ago!

Hi! Since others are talking about my book, thought I'd share a little about it. The book is a love letter to women everywhere wondering why their time just isn't adding up. It turns out, it's not you! We are getting massively squeezed by structural changes! 🧵

I could not love this article any more. YES the NBA makes more-- but players get a higher PERCENTAGE of revenue.

My book, a labor of love, with 15 years of my own research and the stories of countless women, is out today!! I document why women's time has gotten so squeezed, and then provide actionable, evidence-based strategies on what we can do about it! So many people on here did the research in the book! 🙏

I did this beautiful event with Eve Rodsky at a fancy hotel. It was life affirming and incredible. AND, behind the scenes I am living in my book cover. I flew to LA for this event, and my 4 month old baby decided that she didn't want to take a bottle all of a sudden and cried the whole time.

Lisa Cook documented the devastation of the end of Reconstruction. This graph, from her paper "Violence and Economic Activity," shows the effects of Jim Crow on Black patenting and newspapers. As she said on Planet Money: "1899 was the peak year for African American patents per capita. It still is."

Bloomberg did such a beautiful job of covering my research on women's time use!
"You see this mountain in child care + housework time at the same time as women are trying to invest in their careers.”
Intensive parenting + intense careers = a perfect storm.
