There are different places that purport to be AI-checkers. But usually any competent readers (who has read hundreds of essays for years from freshmen) can tell when they have been generated by a LLM.

Yeah. I had one student tell me he is JUST a REALLY GOOD writer. But literally could not remember one single thing about the paper he allegedly wrote 3 days ago.

Yes they were answering DISCUSSIONS with chat gpt last semester for me too. I grade discussion on participation (they don't even have to be right) yet they still refused to even try to answer without chat gpt

I do in class essay exams, so I know how they write. And it's not an issue of identifying AI generated prose (in my opinion). That part is glaringly obvious

We are obligated to meet with students for academic integrity violations or they can contest them and win. I have to follow protocol or they will overturn my decision

Also, it just makes me fatalistic. If a degree is just career preparation and courses are just about "getting through it" then why not outsource the learning?

I wonder if these students,who were not in HS during COVID, had a more normal high school experience and got involved. Either way I will take any enthusiasm over the apathy of the last couple semesters....
