Huh. Smart cookie, Lucy Prebble, I hadn’t seen they brought back Enron the Musical in London this fall.

I’d go to an AI Crash musical. But what genre should it be: glam rock, to go with Jensen’s jackets? Opera, for glorious excess?

Lutnick is back, with another 'shred your law and roll over for Trump and Big Tech or your heavy industry gets it' threat.

No dodging this test of wills. We heard some will in Berlin last week - Merz, Macron. Will we hold?

Break chokepoints, build alternatives.

Ok forgive a blatant birthday swag brag but - I know y’all read - how cool is this?!

This posh Mayfair bookshop (apparently in a Le Carré, @nickharkaway.com?) run a service wherein some bright spark asks what you love and cooks you up a yearly books playlist. Love. 🧡

ICYMI! Dutch competition enforcers are piling in to help the 3x new DMA cloud investigations. This is *great* - with the EC team so short-staffed, they badly need reinforcements.

I'd love to see @cmagovuk.bsky.social assist somehow, (despite Brexit/diff markets) given their own cloud study...

@chipnick.com representing @transrights.northsky.social - cool to hear they use OVH cloud, a nice tie in to our cloud sovereignty workshop this morning!

Fashionably late to the #Euroskylive party and excited to see @sherifea.com, @rose.bsky.team, @erikbugge.bsky.social, and Euractiv founder Christophe Leclercq talk about how we fund and scale the open social web.

Merz is up, citing the cloud outages and chip shortages as Exhibit A for Europe's tech dependence - says you need industry, civil society, academia, everyone to break free
November 18, 2025 at 3:30 PM
Big week in Berlin for FoTI with two events we’ve put on - our small cloud roundtable x KAS x @openmarkets.bsky.social and the very big and open #Euroskylive.

In town for the sovereignty summit? Come say hi 👋 🤓

I'll try and find time to sprinkle some memes (and outtakes) from @robin.berjon.com's and my talk if you didn't make it to the FAR END of montjuic this morning:

That is, indeed, a Big Short.

"There are more tech lobbyists than MEPs."

Big investigation by Peter and @lighthousereports.com out in the New Statesman today. (We spoke re NHS data.)

There's lots beyond the NHS here. I thought I 'knew' TBI; even I was struck by the scale of what Ellison made - it dwarfs major think tanks like IPPR.

Whew! Fireworks aplenty at this debate at France Digitale Day between @gabrielzucman.bsky.social and Philippe Aghion. Appreciated Zucman for showing up to a tough crowd on tax policy and standing his ground. Packed audience, too - France is still v much a big ideas place.

‼️BIG: @teresaribera.ec.europa.eu and DGCOMP just did *part* of the right thing:

- slap Google with 2.95bn fine (not enough but given bullying by Trump and Big Tech, not nothing)
- critically, order Google to stop abusing its dominance. If not:
- Breakups on table

This is game on, not game over.

☠️Europe has got to wake up and do better.

News and arts depend on advertising. This sector is worth *billions* to Europe's economy, and Google has drained the value from it for years. A fine can't prise open the market. To balk even at that?

Speeches about sovereignty are fine words until we act.

"Open protocols are not some utopian project. They are poised to upend the status quo of social media, creating a more democratic digital world."

Europeans also *really want* European social media, as this @peoplevsbigtech.bsky.social poll shows:

Great piece.

Some locals are pushing to have more local species planted (like the cork oak) but it is a battle. This is a beautiful region with more and more fires. I appreciated @edjnet.bsky.social for this reporting, the firefighters, and the people working on forest conservation.
July 8, 2025 at 8:08 AM
I’m in Galicia. Beautiful. But last evening, a wildfire broke out across the estuary. The firefighters managed to put it out, but fire like this is a worrying, striking thing to witness. I wondered if it had anything to do with a strange quality in the forests here:

This is why Google “Sovereign Cloud” isn’t.
Amazon “Sovereign Cloud” - ditto.
Microsoft “Sovereign Cloud” - come on, people. Spot the branding!

Yet authorities from the Bundeswehr to GCHQ to local services have taken the bait. The ICC debacle should drive a big shift. Hard? Yes. But necessary.

Good morning to everyone who wields the levers of public authority to avoid concentrations of power *when in office*.

What this does suggest is that the old view of competition law as a narrow, technocratic side dish is dying. Bien.

We have and there is.

And to those who say 'NO, we can only [do whichever of break/build/enforce is my personal favourite]' -- tapping the sign:
July 3, 2025 at 10:35 AM
The results of the YouGov poll (commissioned by @peoplevsbigtech.bsky.social and @wemoveeurope.bsky.social) are striking: almost two-thirds of European citizens want enforcement against Big Tech - even if it pisses Trump off.
July 3, 2025 at 7:48 AM
This is silly hair-splitting by Microsoft re: its monopoly cloud kill switch. Imagine a country’s chief legal officer (a solicitor general, or for Brits James Eadie) is thrown off MS365. *Of course* this grinds that office’s work to a halt. It is why the sanction was slapped on - to block the ICC.
