Liberty She is a lady of vast maladies, plodding waist deep through the ocean, forcing destinies of war in a great wave before her. Unceasing, unblinking, a comely Leviathan, she drags her shawl of failed revolutions, reeking of gunpowder and kelp. Her rags billow behind like trawling nets, cluttered with plagues and broken friezes. Her mouth is a pit of cruel shanties, ancient songs of fatigue, crushed armies, trench foot, and within her wake twirls a flotsam of blindfolded men. When she finally reaches the far country, she will storm ashore, her hair a tangle of whips and lanyards, and she will bare her breast amid the bunting and bayonets, and she will wave her flag over an ashen mush of corpses, and her victory will be total, and final, and glorious.
