Here we filled these gaps and asked residents of #Halifax #Calgary how they valued urban forests. Most participants valued urban trees for non-material benefits, such as emotional, social, and intellectual fulfillment. @SPeckham @PDuinker @dalhousieu.bsky.social

2) Studies usually focus on the positive things that people think
3) Most studies are in few countries (mostly #US) and extrapolate
4) Most studies generalize about all people but collect data from participants that do not represent all people

Under a project funded by #SSHRC #Canada, I started to look at the evidence on what people said about urban trees. I noticed some key gaps:
1) The terms services, benefits, values, attitudes, and preferences are used interchangeably to mean the same thing.

Many years ago #Colombia I helped restore an urban natural park after illegal mining. Wanting to do more, I enrolled in a PhD on urban forests and trees. I had no clue what #academia #science was, publishing, getting money. The only thing I knew about was teaching! I loved teaching.
