the boys are having a heart to heart
A sepulchral cloud hangs heavy in the air, and Simon finds himself wanting to bark at the dull atmosphere. Though he’s been a good boy for a long time, something within him aches and writhes. It yearns for a scream. It revels in its virulent desire—one that he has to shove back in his ribcage to keep himself sane. “How’re things with Lucy?” Simon asks instead. He nearly laughs at the way Kyle’s lips quirk into a smile at the mere mention of the name. “Good. Yeah, things are really good. She’s a bit excited about getting Valentine’s day off work this year. Don’t think she’s had it off the last two, three years or so. We’ve got a big date night planned.” “Yeah?” Simon teases. “Gonna be makin’ grandbabies for your dad, then?” Kyle’s laugh is pitiful. Airy—half-hearted. Still he nods as his head falls, and he raises it just in time to answer. “Yeah, he’d like that.” “You’ve got plenty of time,” Simon excuses. “Yeah, but he doesn’t.”

He spends his days perched like a bird with a rifle in his hand as if he’s a shepherd guarding livestock, and he realizes that’s what he was always meant to do. It’s all he’s been doing. Protecting the weak. Slaughtering those that would do harm. Saving the sheep in his flock— “Hey Missy!” —and on occasion, a sweet lamb. You enter the chow hall from the main wing wearing navy scrub bottoms and a thick, black jumper. It’s your adorable way of staving off the draft that haunts the dingy infirmary they use as a clinic. Hardly mustering a smile—let alone a polite one—you quickly raise and drop your hand in a wave before slipping away to grab your own meal. Simon notices the twitch in your lip. That narrowly contained glare. You haven’t been a fan of the nickname bestowed upon you—Missy; short for little miss—but the boys refuse to call you anything else. They name you like a pet. All soft things deserve a good name.

When she doesn’t respond right away, instead of letting the silence sit, you fill it with a half formed explanation. “Sorry, I just—well—you sounded a little congested, I guess.” More silence follows, and for a fleeting moment you’ve convinced yourself you’ve said something wrong. Something out of turn. Then, there’s a long draw of breath. “Oh, you know. Just… one of those days,” Aelin says.
