We're having to give up on our planned trip to Melrose to see @ellemcnicoll.bsky.social at the Borders Book Festival. The rain here is torrential and sadly the trains will not restart in time. Fingers crossed we will get tickets for the Edinburgh event instead as I have a super fan in the house! 📚

No break from @thorntonsbooks.bsky.social - today’s Landmark Trust email about properties to rent had lots of info on (rabbit) warren houses which increased in popularity in the 17thC. Thornton writes about building a ‘warrant house’ which we had decided was probably a warren house.

My contributor copy has arrived! Lots of beautiful images of exhibition items. Do go along to the British Library's amazing exhibition, Medieval Women: In Their Own Words, if you can - on until 2 March 2025.

Day out at the theatre but no escaping 17th-century wills. The OG Anne Hathaway as Shakespeare’s ‘second best bed’ overshadowed Juliet for me.

The journey Thornton made (there and back). It is likely some of this was by carriage as she specifically mentions having to go on foot over Whitestone Cliff.

Alice Thornton was also not a fan of the Scots: discussion of a Presbyterian who was briefly her local minister is labelled in the margin of her third book of her life 'A scottch Cheate'. @thorntonsbooks.bsky.social

'I began to place the books in the new library, but expecting more to come in, we could not be very exact and nor did we make a catalogue' (Thomas Comber, 1696).
