The mutual information between ECG-EEG phase dynamics revealed stronger heart-brain coupling in the lowest frequencies. This coupling estimate declined in the transition from on-task to mind-blanking states, complicating the idea of an attentional switch between external & internal environments

Besides modulation of the HEP in mind-wandering (vs. on-task), mind-wandering reports were also associated with greater heart-rate variability (HRV). Our analysis suggests these effects are independent, implying that HEP & HRV tap into distinct aspects of central autonomic state fluctuations

This version of the preprint includes a replication dataset that increased our initial sample 3-fold, enabling us to resolve our original findings with greater precision as well as uncovering novel heart-brain connectivity effects
