I have many thoughts on this ballot and, barring a podcast invite, I’ll write them up in the next couple of days.

Something very important to remember heading into this year’s committee cycle is the following eligibility rule change that was announced in March.

Bill James selected Charlie Bennett as the catcher for his 1880s Gold Glove team.

Home Run Charlie had the highest 1880s OPS+ of anyone on James’ team.

30,000 people paid to attend the Phillies play the Phillies in an intrasquad exhibition. Insane.

It’s very unsettling though.

Nola v. Harper.

Luzardo v. Schwarber.

Not sure when to cheer.

New reason to devalue All Star appearances when evaluating Hall of Fame resumes.

Apparently players may or may not be named All Stars solely based on whether or not they will play in the game.

JT Realmuto has joined a short list of catchers with 100 or more stolen bases.

He is just one of 6 to reach the milestone post-WWII.

With all the fake news circulating I’m going to clear things up once and for all: Kid Nichols IS a member of the Madison Mallards Wall of Fame.

OTD in 1880, Worcester's Lee Richmond pitched a perfect game against the Cleveland Blues.

Worcester's catcher? Charlie Bennett.

"The best backstop that ever lived. He went after everything...and he kept his pitcher from going into the air." - Richmond on Bennett

I had a birthday last week. Some friends got together last night to celebrate and they crushed it!

Incredible Phanatic cake and unopened packs of 1980, 1981, and 1982 Topps (took the photo after I already opened them).

And yes, a buddy tried the gum.

For 1946 do you have any numbers for his games in Hawaii?

This SABR article mentions him playing games there.

Wendell Smith puts him there in 1946 too, though he says the Crescents.

But I have this other clipping too which mentions a homer for Luke.

Pitcher Dick Littlefield was born on this day in 1926.

Littlefield is the only player to (nearly) be traded in exchange for Jackie Robinson when he, plus $30k, was to be dealt from the Giants to the Dodgers for Jackie, but Jackie refused to report to the cross-town rival.

I think Kenny Lofton is somewhat comparable to Richie Ashburn and, if that second rule existed during Ashburn’s post-BBWAA period there’s a good chance he wouldn’t be enshrined.

This is all dumb.
