Centre this roadmap around energy demand reduction by decarbonising heating and cooling and replacing fossil fuels with clean home-grown renewable energy sources.

But what policies will get us there? Our suggestions: 👉

Imports are still imports. Whether they come from Russia, the US, Qatar or Azerbaijan, they create volatility, inequality and risk. So what can the EU do?

Choose energy independence through electrified heat, local renewables, and climate-resilient buildings.

Replacing polluting fuels with clean heating and cooling makes the EU safer. 30 million additional heat pumps could replace about half of the gas imported from Russia in 2022.

As Commissioner Jørgensen put it, "Less energy from Russia, more power for Europe.”

The heating sector is central to gas use. Heating & cooling together represent about ½ of EU’s energy demand, with over 70% coming from fossil fuels. Have a look at our infographic for more 👇

But if this roadmap leads to swapping Russian imports for gas from elsewhere, we’ve missed the point. Here's our run-through of what the roadmap contains:

✅ energy efficiency & renewables to replace gas
❌ no actions towards that goal
❌ no mention of consumption reduction
❌ no mention of heating

Last year, the EU still imported 75bcm of gas. A roadmap to end EU imports of Russian fossil fuels is a very welcome step, and represents a clear political signal:

No country should be able to weaponise energy, blackmail EU Member States, or have its war machine financed by EU consumers.

If only internalising the concepts of decarbonised heating and cooling was as easy as consuming a cupcake...! But we're very happy they made an impact 🧁 😇
