Boots Christmas Collection £3.75

A bland chicken sandwich for you, a bland cheese sandwich for your veggie friend and a ham sandwich presumably for your dog because it's not real food.
Positives: it's a triple so will fill you up if you decide you can eat it yourself maybe?

I had Nando’s “The Total Sleigh” and it wasn’t great or terrible. Definitely overpriced for what you get.
Doesn’t qualify for the comp as you can’t walk in and pick it up (or point at it for someone to pass to you) and then take it back to your desk.
Would get a score of 4 if it was included here.

ASDA Magical Three Little Piggies Half & Half Wrap £2.88

The magic in this is how little filling you can put in something and still list it as an ingredient. Barely qualifies for Xmas lunch comp as 1/2 not Xmassy.
Onion chutney tasted like bbq sauce. Ok, but small & not v.xmassy

No.

Just cos it’s in an Xmas box doesn’t make it an Xmas sandwich.

Greggs Christmas Lunch Baguette £3.95

Another case where using actual turkey would immeasurably improve a sandwich.
It’s ok. A bacon & cheese (!?) baguette with cranberry relish and chicken, sage & onion stuffing (not chicken and sage & onion stuffing). Felt a bit conned by that.

ASDA Classic Festive Feast £3.02

Soooo bland.
This sandwich is a result of a product meeting with the brief "What's the bare minimum we can put in to an Xmas 'Feast' sandwich and not get fined by Trading Standards?".
Looks cheap; tastes cheap, is cheap (cheapest sandwich so far).

M&S Fa la la la fel wrap £4.25 [V]

Forgive the stupid name, this is wonderful. It says it has pine nuts but luckily you can't taste them.
Lots of flavours and textures in this one and they all go together. Pickled red cabbage is awesome.
It is vegan too.
Best so far.

Boots Christmas Wrapped £3.45

Supposedly spicy, but it’s what your UKIP Nan might describe as ‘spicy’ along with coriander balsamic vinegar.
Quite bland but when you do get a bit of flavour it’s pleasant.
Filling is stingy so prob why there wasn’t much flavour.
Disappointing.

My three things atm are probably

- Sandwiches
- Fixating on something small very briefly but very intensely (e.g. Red Bounty)
- Occasional jibes at the expense of the English

Morrisons Brie & Cranberry £3.25 [V]

The brie was surprisingly chunky - a lot more generous than M&S's offering.
It's a shame that the cranberry sauce tasted just a little artificial and cheap.
Not too bad overall.

Sainsburys No Pigs Under Blankets £3.40 [V]

Some vegan alternatives are crap. But this is ok. A little bland & looks nasty. Facon looks like toy food.
It's wheat & mushroom proteins - I normally don't like wheat-based fakes but texture here is ok.
Nicer than the equivs with meat.

Sainsbury’s Pigs Under Blankets £3.40

This was so flavourless I was about to get a Covid test. Then I hit the coin-sized piece of meat with the flavour and just realised this is a terrible sandwich.
Stingy amount of flavourless meat on equally flavourless bread.
Pathetic.

Sainsbury's Festive Chicken, Bacon & Stuffing Wrap £3.40

I had low expectations and was surprised. This is nice - cranberry not too sweet. Loaded with stuffing to save on more expensive meat but stuffing is really nice.
It's not too heavy like some sandwiches.
Great value wrap.

Sainsbury’s Turkey Feast £3.40

A feast fit for a king! As long as that’s the king of the woodlice or some other tiny creature cos this sandwich has scant filling.
Look how empty that corner is!
The only thing they didn’t skimp on is the cranberry which is far too sweet.
Woeful.

M&S Pigs In Blankets £4.00

Every couple of years M&S see what high street rivals get away with, then decide to lower the quality of their equivalent.
This sandwich represents that commitment to mediocrity.

Considerably nicer than the ‘Christmas Lunch’ wrap despite their similar names.

M&S Boxing Day Curry Wrap £4.50

This was really nice.
But my friend Sophie suggested looking at the ingredients...
- pulled chicken,
- bhaji-style onions,
- seeded wheatflour tortilla,
- curry sauce,
- mint & coriander yogurt,
- spinach
Not an Xmas sandwich.

If you served me this combo for Xmas lunch I’d start crying and apologising for whatever it was I’d done to hurt you this year and make damn sure it never happened again.

The greyest tortilla wrap I have ever seen.

Tesco Turkey & Trimmings £3.40

Compared to Boots & Sains, Tesco are little more generous with the poultry and their bacon is better.
You can taste all the components and they’re all ok. This is what I’d call the minimum acceptable Xmas sandwich.

15p more than Sainsbury’s’ses and so much nicer. The bread was soft and fluffy, the spinach crisp, reasonably thick slices of brie. Cranberry not too sweet, but still a little sweet for my liking.
