BLACK PEOPLE INVENTED TECHNO" Fascinated with technology, science fiction, Funk, and futurism, Juan Atkins grew up in Detroit in the 1970s learning to play music. Destined for the Motor City's thriving underground party scene, Juan and his friends began DJing and tinkering with drum machines, making futuristic electronic music that they called "Techno." In 1988, Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Santonio Echols, Eddie Fowlkes, and Blake Baxter, now known as the Techno 6, released their first compilation record, "Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit" on Virgin Records. The Detroit sound was a hit and exploded in Europe. Techno was on the radio, on MTV, and popular on dancefloors. A new music genre was born! "I called my music Techno music from the start because I always felt my music was born from technology." - Juan Atkins The Techno 6 paved the way for several different forms of electronic music to successfully follow. Over the next 40 years, a multi-billion dollar dance music industry emerged, benefitting mostly white musicians-leaving the Techno 6 largely forgotten. "God Said Give 'Em Drum Machines" sets the record straight, giving a name and a face to the true Black creators of Techno music who changed the course of Black history and music history forever.
