Outside the Empire and the OSU things are likewise more complicated, with unaligned worlds ranging widely in education levels and methods. For every world where encyclopedic knowledge engrams are publicly accessible, there's a totalitarian state that keeps its population functionally illiterate.

In the larger Auric Empire, education is far more uneven. In Reincorporation-owned worlds, no education is free and the only one generally offered is a vocational school that puts enrolled pupils in debt. To contrast, worlds like Artesia have has a free and advanced system identical to the OSU.

The Auric Republic has a formal gymnasium system with compulsory and free primary and secondary education, and subsidized advanced education for Patricians. Plebians get access to state primary school, but secondary and post secondary education is prohibitively expensive.

In the Omnistellar Union, education is free, widespread, and voluntary. Virtually everyone ends up pursuing our equivalent of advanced degrees over the course of their lifetimes, in accordance with their respective interests. Many even spend a few years teaching their favored subjects.

One of the things I love about (and steal from) Lancer is that Lancer blows apart the gordion knot with a laser cannon. All the choices defining your character as a person, their background, and talents does not come at a cost for combat effevtiveness, because the two are separate build domains.
