#BeingHuman2025 is almost here.
Looking forward to this landmark performance of music by Holocaust survivors at the Menuhin Hall in Cobham, Surrey, on 13 November. My short introduction will explore how storytelling can unravel traumatic histories.
Free event and open to all.

What an absolutely stunning autumn this year (even though the 4pm sunset doesn’t get easier year on year).

Obligatory photo of Stonehenge (looking quite ominous) from the obligatory traffic line.

I think the best thing about this film may actually be Julia Roberts' shoes (and general academic wardrobe) and the bossa nova soundtrack.

(in reality, I think it was Andrew Garfield's acting, but it pains me to say this for a film with two strong female leads).

And incidentally, here is a great study on Ferrer, his pedagogical work, syndicalism and the global wave of protests triggered by his execution.

Beautiful autumn vibes on October 1st.

Oh yes it is - and I found it literally as I was thinking I needed a bookmark.

Serendipitous find in a charity shop book purchase.
Am I correct that this is an old Yugoslavian note?

Unfortunately it feels like the surrender already happened some time ago (and long before Starmer himself became PM).
Even the ‘surrender the flag’ rhetoric is couched in nationalistic discourse.

Top placard for today’s counter protest.

A timeline cleanser to hold on to the summer... French neoimpressionist (and anarchist sympathiser) Paul Signac paints Saint-Tropez in 1895.
For yes, back in the day, St Trop' was the epitome of the anarchist idyll.

A lovely colleague has sent me rare diary entries recounting the last days of French anarchist Jean Grave in 1939, and it is quite poignant to read about his prostate problems and ongoing tax issues (after a life of tax-dodging, in good anarchist fashion).

I will write about this... eventually!

Staying in a converted Maharaja’s palace/ Victorian-era hospital which is straight out of a Wes Anderson film.

The memorial of the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar, where British troops shot up to 1,500 civilians, not mincing words - and why should they?

The iconic 1970s charm of Neelam’s restaurant in Amritsar.

The magnificent Golden Temple in Amritsar- even queueing to get inside was so nice and interesting.

In my son’s definitive words, ‘some of these aunties need to chill out’.
