All right, cards on the table: I think the debt ceiling is ridiculous. Warren’s clearly right: periodically flirting with needless default is lunacy.

I’m genuinely surprised that’s not obvious to everyone. Dems can push back against GOP priorities, but the debt ceiling’s not the way to do that.

So your position is that anyone who expresses support of Trump’s call for debt ceiling elimination is a MAGA supporter? You win. Well played.

I agree with President-elect Trump that Congress should terminate the debt limit and never again govern by hostage taking.

Trunp’s first choice is full elimination; his second choice is suspending through 2029. I can’t see Dems going for suspension, but elimination has been their desired outcome for years.

The consistent position is to be delighted if you get what you want, not to be worried about being blamed for it.

Yes, eliminating the debt ceiling eliminates it for everybody — GOP and Democratic administrations alike. Republicans won’t like what Democrats do without the debt ceiling and vice versa.

Until now, the Democratic position was that the tradeoff was worth it b/c the debt ceiling itself was bad.

Very interesting thread!

It sounds like the real magic words are not please and thank you, but rather “I hereby invoke my right to a lawyer and my right to remain silent.”

Would that work?
