Around 90 billion pieces of plastic are thrown away in the UK every year. This plastic pollution is a global problem that needs tackling urgently – and we can all help by reducing single-use plastics.

Instead of using chemicals, attract beneficial insects like hoverflies to keep aphids and whiteflies in check. Nectar-rich planting, wildflowers and areas of long grass will bring beneficial insects into your garden.

Could you grow a bumblebee’s breakfast? When insects emerge from hibernation in February and March they’ll be looking for something to eat – so growing plants that produce nectar-rich flowers in early spring really helps.

Another busy day, earlier I volunteered to help Woodland Trust plant some more trees in a nearby woodland they are creating. The dog supervised and the rain did not dampen people's spirits. This evening, the rain had stopped, and whilst walking the dog, I enjoyed the sunset.

Fruit trees benefit all sorts of wildlife, including bees, bats and birds. But around two thirds of UK orchards have been lost since 1960. Planting an apple tree in your garden or community can really help to boost biodiversity.

A lovely afternoon walk on Christmas Day, across the back fields; a cold wind, blue sky and the sun is shinning.

After a wet start, not a bad end of the day; the sun is setting and the temperature is dropping, and a good walk over the fields with the dog.

Wild gardens can be havens for wildlife in autumn. Around 22 million people have access to a garden in the UK – so gardening in a way that helps nature bounce back can have a huge impact. Avoiding pesticides and weedkillers is one key action – more ideas: littlegreenspace.org.uk/features/wil...

If you want to reduce plastic use, avoid yellow kitchen sponges like these. They're made of plastic, can't be recycled, don't break down in landfill – and release microplastics into the sea. Eco-friendly, compostable alternatives are available – see: littlegreenspace.org.uk/reviews/seep...

Fake cobwebs like these may look spooky – but what's really scary about them is that they can trap & injure wildlife, including birds, insects & small mammals. And fake webs aren't recyclable – so will end up in landfill for many years.
