Finally, I placed him in game! Here he is and here is some gameplay of the Elephant which you play as! :) Hope you enjoyed this little ramble, follow for more!

Next was unwrapping and texturing! I tried to give him some realistic-ish clothing to match the look of the Elephant :)

I then proceeded to model the body, belt, and legs separately, focusing on keeping all connecting joints the same amount of vertices.

The next step really depends on what you prioritize but I wanted to get the look of the guard’s head down! I think in a lot of projects it’s important to model the face first; it’s typically the area with the most detail and the main focal point for a player to look at.

I began concepting by drawing him out on a piece of paper, combining all the inspiration I had gathered, as well as clipart of “security guards”. This was the final design which I landed on.

I decided to give the character very lank proportions, similar to K2SO, Waluigi, and myself. This would make it easier to animate based on my own movements and also give a unique visual image of a tall, overarching figure.

I decided to make him act quite bored. He is always slouching, barely holding his flashlight, and falling asleep on the job. To make him more unapproachable, I decided to give him large, reflective glasses to give the look of a man who doesn’t want to be spoken to.

Next, I started to think more about how the character would act (which would be useful for animation later). I thought of him as a very pompous character; it would mean I get to give a serious look to the guy, and then confuse him when he sees a moving elephant statue…

Since I knew the “type” of character that I wanted (a stern guard), I already had a pretty good base for where to start looking for inspiration. Characters such as the dad from CWACOM, Luca which bring this stern but recognisable look.

As someone who studied this, it's great to look at other GDD's made by companies and see how they made them. The original GTA is a great inspiration for my GDDs as it gets across all the sections and points generally needed for a game!
