Never know why schools do this nonsense
I learnt far more from a week in Paris or Rome than I ever did in any given week in school

Also if you want to talk about Orthodoxy, it was ultimately destroyed in the region by the Islamists anyway. How Christian is Turkey? Not very.
The most overrated empire in history, I genuinely don't understand byzantine-bros that aren't just Orthodox simps
December 11, 2024 at 1:30 PM
They pushed into Europe *whilst* the byzantine empire was still standing lol
And it was western defense of Europe that kept them at bay, not the byzantines - who had to call the west in for help constantly because they were incapable of defending themselves

Because I don't believe it had any major or lasting effects on the world outside of the Balkans and I guess Russia (but even then, Russia didn't convert because of Byzantium)

This is objectively not the case when talking about the Napoleonic era & it's consequences

The actual number is impossible to determine, but statistically speaking; theoretically almost every single person is descended from him, in fact we're all direct descendants of royalty from 1000+ years ago

I very much do not agree with you on that nor do I agree modern scholarship has disproved it

The Byzantine empire *surviving* proves it was a weak state. It survived. It didn't thrive, nor did it push its enemies back without all of christendom helping it.
An empire completely irrelevant to history
December 11, 2024 at 12:54 PM
Again, Orthodox Christianity is irrelevant outside of the balkans (and Russia I guess, fine? Still nowhere near as big as the effect Western civilisation has)

It did nothing to shield the west, which had to shield itself using the crusades (mostly which were to unite Knights & stop internal wars)
December 11, 2024 at 12:52 PM
I don't think that's the case, outside of the 1st crusade which was western backed, the Byzantines were functionally incapable of ever defeating their enemies
I think continually just avoiding relegation like Everton do makes you kind of a bad football team, and the Byzantines are basically Everton

He kept an incredibly weak state going which would spend most of that next 1000 years being bodied by Islamic invaders until it no longer existed

It also had no serious lasting cultural effect outside of the balkans, so I don't see how propping up a small empire with no lasting effect is major

I think you're underestimating his effect on history, he directly caused the state of the next 130 years & changed how governments work
If you're latin american, you can thank Napoleon for your country existing too
I think you've overestimated figures like Justinian, Otto, etc

Charlemagne is #1 tho
December 11, 2024 at 12:04 PM
The rise of archaeology/Egyptology, the changing relationship with the Islamic world, the creation of the concept of "corps" & "armies" in a modern sense revolutionising war, directly affecting Crimea and ww1 etc, the creation of state higher education systems or state central banks

I can go on btw
December 11, 2024 at 11:29 AM
Have to disagree here

Napoleon directly caused the Napoleonic code centralising government, created several countries, ended the HRE after him resulted in the pax britannica & the rise of militant Prussia creating the German Empire, expanded the US massively, caused the LatAm wars of independence,
December 11, 2024 at 11:27 AM
Yeah you'll get into it I'm sure, it's very replayable too & there's a bunch of different idk "timelines" depending on what you do

The fact that Larian can do this & big studios given us slop or remakes all the time says a lot

BG3 is awesome, so much to do and so many ways to do it, it gives you a lot of freedom & the narrative is great

Also the voice acting is superb

The problem is that "the power of business" under neoliberalism isn't a real thing
There's the perpetual lie that cutting taxes/regulations will cause growth, but it never does ofc
Meanwhile businesses now are "making cuts" due to tax rises, ultimately corporate greed is now destroying the nation

It's frustrating but I understand it, especially when most practicing Catholics (especially Anglos & ergo most of those you meet online) are really quite right wing these days
