It always appears to me that when this is done, it's to raise the stakes, a new chapter tacked on to the story once the first finishes. It's a practically unlimited source of power creep, so to speak, and in my opinion it can easily cheapen whatever happened to the sona on the base layer.

If you wanna play as a human, and do a "character jumps up a layer to get me" thing, that's cool
I just think it's immensely silly to go "this character I use to represent myself is not me... it's actually this *new* character I use to represent myself, who controlled the other one this whole time!"
