I make films
Just finished this tome by the great Cameron Crowe. Like a Forrest Gump for 70s rock, he somehow managed to BE IN THE ROOM for so many seminal music moments that you’d hate him if he wasn’t so charming, self-deprecating and easy going. That’s likely how he GOT in the room. When’s his movie era book?

Just finished the best book I’ve read this year. A collection of connected stories about the unique hellscape of our modern world, it is reminiscent of Todd Solondz style cruelty comedy. This isn’t “dark” humour - it’s a pitch black tunnel through the mind of the terminally online and totally alone.

After reading The Houseguest, I’ve now finished another great book of horror short stories by a Latina author, this time from Argentina. A Sunny Place For Shady People is scary in its own unique way. It’s about unhappy people and the stories they tell themselves - it just happens to involve ghosts.

Went to the HorrorHound convention in Cincinnati last weekend and it was very humbling and fun to look people in the eye who appreciate what I do. There were married couples who met in Saw chat rooms! If you can make something that affects people, then you can’t ask for much more as an artist. Hugs.

Walking around my beloved hometown of Melbourne, I visited a local icon - The Tote. A rock n roll institution. Also the place where I shot the worst student film of all time, The Demise Of Fallon Thomas, about a punk band who kills the people who comes to see their shows. It looks exactly the same.

Yes I also read this recently, an excellent book of short stories by an author from Mexico who has finally been translated into English. Amparo Dávila’s stories are all stark, spare psychological horror tales about the scariest thing of all (in my opinion) - losing one’s own mind.

This is my favourite quote from the book - in regard to filmmaking but mostly in regard to life itself. Might be one of the best quotes I’ve ever read.

Finished this today. From the author of The Big Goodbye - a brilliantly written book about the making of Chinatown - this is a deep dive into Coppola’s dream of creating a new kind of film studio, a utopian artists collective called Zoetrope. Very inspiring but will make you feel lazy by comparison.

At the Saw 20th anniversary screening at the Egyptian Theatre in LA, a young woman named Tori gave me this handmade card in which she wrote some very nice things about how much that film meant to her. I never got a chance to say thanks to her - so here is my very belated thanks, Tori.

Australia, you just get me. Love you, always.

Corbett sent me her new acting headshot and she’d probably kill me for sharing it but I had to, the community needs hottie alerts especially in this time of fire danger

Some cast members joining me for the Sydney premiere. You KNOW I can’t make a film without my friend Benedict Hardie.

So happy to have had this beautiful human by my side for the whole Wolf Man journey. Corbett co-wrote the film with me and her brilliant mind made everything better. Here we are at the Melbourne premiere, finally sending our work out into the world.

Once again, I swear I’m having a good time doing these interviews. It’s not just Corbett having fun.

Press day for Wolf Man and don’t I look excited! (I swear I am)

This is what directors do. If you don’t point at things you’re not a director

The character of Adam in the first Saw movie has the last name Radford. I have no idea where “Faulkner-Stanheight” came from (an unnecessarily long name btw - is he married?) but that’s what happens when you don’t have much to do with the sequels. Pictured is my original draft of Saw, note the name.

Blue sky

I did the sound mix for Wolf Man at Warner Bros. Every day I would get there early and wander around the lot. On one of those days, I saw the plaque in this picture - movies that have shot on Stage 15. That middle column is basically my childhood. Incredible. Imagine what the lot was like.
