Today is the first time I have seen explicit Nazi/antisemitic graffiti on the #usyd campus.

I’ve reported it to campus maintenance, but I feel it is important to call out that this crap is never acceptable.

I’ve tagged @sydney.edu.au so that they can hopefully resolve this quickly, as…

The decline in vegan options in the supermarkets correlates with the rise in fascism. In this essay I will argue that this is a causal relationship

We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers.

The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.

Horrible act.

This whole operation is probably the most successful / impressive infiltration attacks committed since ww2. Doubly impressive that it is against a nation with a sophisticated intelligence network

🚨 💉The FDA will no longer approve COVID vaccines for people 6mo–64yrs who don't have a risk factor for severe COVID-19. People 65 years and older and those under 65 with risk factors can still get vaccinated.

There's so much to unpack here. See a few thoughts below 👇

Sad to hear the news that the CSIRO magazine double helix will no longer be operating. Given the US led global attacks on science, it is more important than ever to continue science outreach to kids.

Question for the academics who teach: what are you thoughts on “freebie” extensions for the students? For context, I teach a class at USYD, where students can automatically get a 5 day extension no questions asked. For this class, an assignment was due today, and only 15% of students submitted on…

We don't actually have to listen and report on what these assholes say. Having billions of dollars does not make your opinions more valuable than anyone else.

In fact we shouldn't listen to your opinion on anything because you are a little dragon hoarding wealth and watching people suffer.

It’s incredibly obvious that this is just the government dog whistling to misogynists and quiverfull types. But it’s funny (in a sad way) that this is coming from the likes of Elon who wants to colonise mars - how can you colonise if you refuse to send women.

Just found out that American PhD applicants have to pay to apply - what the fuck.

I can’t think of a good reason why. The closest would be to cover the paperwork costs, but surely the value would have a successful candidate’s labour would outweigh this?

Interesting post. We will soon have all the data we're going to have for more than three years about this asteroid that currently has a 1 in 63 chance of hitting us in 2032.
Here's the observability chart from Lowell for the next decade for 2024 YR4 with generous settings (V < 24.5). After the last few observations from this apparition and archival data, there will be no more until Dec 2028.
