I just learned that cheetahs are so anxious - especially around humans - that certain zoos and rescues will house them with emotional support dogs and I can't even.

In her first year as Oregon governor — a milestone Kotek is officially marking Tuesday — she stood out not for the hyper-progressive slate of proposals detractors warned about on the campaign trail. Instead, many observers note the governor has spent the last 365 days sounding a bit like her more-conservative opponents from last year’s race. Kotek has called for loosening the state’s vaunted land-use policies, sent more police to the city of Portland, touted the need for tighter drug laws, passed major business subsidies, and called for a freeze on taxes.

On Friday, over 750,000 Oregonians (and 40 million people across the country) will lose their SNAP benefits.

It sucks that Oregon is sitting on $2.9 billion between the rainy day fund and the Education Stability Fund, but this is as much as the state is willing to do.
In a statement, Oregon human services officials said they were closely monitoring the situation but urged SNAP recipients to prepare for the worst. "During this time of uncertainty, we encourage everyone who receives SNAP to familiarize themselves with the free food resources in their community and to make a plan for what they will do if they do not receive their food benefits in November on time," said Liesl Wendt, the agency's acting director. The Oregon Food Bank said in a statement Monday that any delay in good benefits will have an immediate impact on Oregon communities.

The concentration camp was never the normal condition for the average gentile German. Unless one was Jewish, or poor and unemployed, or actively leftist or otherwise openly anti-Nazi, Germany from 1933 until well into the war was not a nightmarish place. All the "good Germans" had to do was obey the law, pay their taxes, give their sons to the army, avoid any sign of political heterodoxy, and look the other way when unions were busted and troublesome people disappeared. Since many "middle Americans" already obey the law, pay their taxes, give their sons to the army, are themselves distrustful of political heterodoxy, and applaud when unions are broken and troublesome people are disposed of, they probably could live without too much personal torment in a fascist state —some of them certainly seem eager to do so. Orwell's imaginings to the contrary, what is so terrifying about fascism is its "normality," its compatibility with the collective sentiments of substantial numbers of "normal" persons—though probably never a majority in any society.
