It's good to be aware, but I think it plays into defeatism more than is helpful. It lends itself to 'there's nothing you can do, might as well accept it," which just isn't true.

This article was written in October and I'd say that we've made considerable progress in our fight against fascism since then. Everyone's threat model is different, but the fight isn't over and it's not too late. It's just getting started.

"Stop shaming readers" flattens all reading into the same thing: comfort. It's not. Reading is how people have learned to fight back for centuries for their rights, their history, how power actually works. We're holding one of the most powerful tools humans have ever built. Use it.

Sure, rest is important. But there's a difference between recharging and never plugging in. 50 smut books a year isn't self-care, it's a subscription to not paying attention. And, even if you think it is self-care, self-care isn't resistance.

"Different value structures" is a real fancy way of saying "don't ask me to care about hard things." If democracy is burning, reading about how to put out fires isn't a projected need — it's a shared one.

Reading Volga Blues right now. Also watched Mr. Nobody Against Putin. We're on a slippery slope and one can see the similarities in modern-day Russia and where the United States is headed if we don't intervene now.
