Your example of Red Elemental Blast a Swans of Bryn Argoll in a monowhite deck bothers me too. The rules of Magic explicitly say Swans is both white AND blue, regardless of the color of mana used to cast it. It is inherently both colors, and should be bound by the color identity rules.
