the brainrot continues
Sometimes the feeling of death lingers, blurring the lines that border reality and dream, and Jungha gasps and clutches at the phantom sensation of Soojin's fingers pressed along the too sensitive arch of her throat in her physical state. Instead of fear, Jungha vaguely remembers what it feels like to yearn. Soojin has shredded her way deep into Jungha in ways she hadn't felt before, pain burning through her very being and licking through every part of her. It almost seems to layer onto one death to the next, and Jungha can't tell the difference between where each slash of Soojin's blade ends and where her hands begin, how someone could show such cruelty and gentleness in equal measure. The room is spinning around her, tangling her perceptions together. She would drop to the ground, but Soojin catches her and lets Jungha's weight become her own. The deja vu of the situation makes Jungha's chest burn boldly as the memory of bleeding out comes to her mind. She dares to reach up to cup Soojin's cheek and Soojin has her wrist before she can touch her. Her grip is firm. Her hand warm. But Jungha doesn't yield. "You said this nightmare will never end," she says. "But we're meant to wake up from it." Soojin releases Jungha's wrist, then, her gaze all encompassing as she stares down at her and says nothing. Jungha's hand hovers like she's waiting for permission, her breathing shallow behind the mask covering her face. She tries to fight the sensation of drifting off, but the smell of decay and wilting flowers fill her lungs. Her hand falls away.

Soojin doesn't hesitate to kill her in their first meeting, and it's somewhat tender, the way she thrusts her blade through Jungha's chest and lets her bleed out slowly in her arms, looking into her eyes like it means something. "Do you still dream, good Hunter?" she asks. Death is not an unfamiliar feeling to Jungha, no longer a conceivable difference from closing her eyes to slumber. A second in the void, then she's opening her eyes to the warm light of a lantern. Soojin waits. She's meant to be hunted, but it's against Jungha's morals to kill another human, even if they strike at her first. Even in a place of such corruption, where killing is more than righteous. "I don't want to fight you," she says, hands off her weapons. She doesn't move even as Soojin approaches her. "This is what we hunters do," Soojin tells her, her blade at Jungha's throat, the mere touch of the iron against her skin drawing blood. She leans in close to whisper something into Jungha's ear, but Jungha can't understand what she's saying. Her world goes dark. It becomes a brutal cycle, Jungha's flesh and blood sluicing from Soojin's blade. But it doesn't stop her from coming back again, and again, and again. "Hunter," Soojin says, calling Jungha in a careful, measured way. "What is it that you seek? You are a fool to think there is something here for you." Jungha staggers. And suddenly, Soojin's there, pulling her close, her touch surprisingly gentle. Jungha's knees buckle, and she shivers despite herself. "I seek to end this nightmare," she says, and she has to pull down her mask so that it doesn't get hot around her neck with the way she's gasping for air. "Is that so?" Soojin leans even closer. "There's something here that must be put to rest," Jungha says. "If you are so sure of that," Soojin says, her thumb brushing lightly against the pulse beating wildly under Jungha's ear, "you must be willing to fight." "I will not fight you," Jungha says again, and she's so earnest, her eyes bright and fierce. A silence follows, thick with anticipation. "Then this nightmare will never end." Soojin wraps her hands around Jungha's throat to strangle her, and for a moment, Jungha thinks Soojin's expression looks soft and gentle in her half-blurred vision.

Seokjin dreams of the clear, blue sky above and the red of blood and the sea. Gently, the waves from the red sea lap against his skin, beckoning him to surface from the dream. The blue sky dissolves into darkness, and through the haze, he can barely make out what's above him, but he feels another presence. "Seokjin-ssi, you're awake," someone says. "I've been waiting to meet you." Seokjin's vision finally adjusts. The boy looks ethereal, the moonlight filtering through the skylight lending him the illusion of a halo around his head, though Seokjin can't be certain it is only an illusion. He reaches up with a trembling hand. "I'm Jeongguk," the boy says, gently grasping Seokjin's hand, his voice warm. "Jeon Jeongguk. I'm just like you, another Child burdened by fate." Jeongguk, Seokjin tries to say, but it comes out in nothing but a breath. He wills himself not to cry while Jeongguk stares into his eyes with a tenderness so startling. It's been such a long time to Seokjin, to know someone else's hands and their gentleness. He feels undeserving. "You don't have to shoulder this burden alone anymore," Jeongguk says, trailing his hand up Seokjin's arm. The simple kindness from Jeongguk's touch overflows and spills through his cracks, his body like a broken vessel. He can't suppress the small sob that finally leaves his mouth, closes his eyes because it's too much. He feels soft fingers wipe away his tears. "You are not alone," Jeongguk says, and it's the last thing Seokjin hears before falling back under. He dreams of drifting in a sea of light.
