Part of what got me hooked on reading game of thrones was it seemed to have a streak of "maybe there being kings at all is core to our problems" but cynicism can be tiring in a different way

Perhaps not the direction you were thinking, but I grew up reading a lot of pulpy fantasy novels and sometimes see folks with similar tastes thinking of how much the idea of return of the king is baked into the genre. Reinstate the chosen one and everything's great

This assumes Tolstar and Lady Lima are being truthful. Tolstar behaves like a con artist and seems to lurk at the Mushroom-Beanbean border to take advantage of ignorant travelers. Lady Lima might be using her government status to stiff the brothers on a reward. Of course, this is conjecture.
