Other scenes were SO relatable to me. I also had a giant extended family growing up. There’s a scene where Avi’s trying to teach his family to play Catan that is so painfully real to me XD Yeah, this show rules, please watch it if you can.

A big theme in the show is characters grappling with their Jewish identity. Obviously I can’t relate to that or comment on how realistically it’s portrayed, but I found it really compelling, especially Avi who later in life ties Judaism with his complicated relationship to his mom.

I’d love if they did a second season. In particular, I’d love to see more about Elliot, the dad. Part of his charm is how understated he it next to his bombastic wife, but it feels kind of like a hole in the character development. He reminds me of my dad though so I like him.

It’s also got that Bojack wit and that Bojack crushing sadness. So often a brutal character turn will be punctuated with a perfect joke that makes the drama sting even harder, and hidden behind it is so much good will. I was sobbing in the last episode.

I’ve seen other shows and movies experiment with chronological order as a main premise, to varying degrees of success, but LSS pulls it off better than most. Scenes in the past constantly recontextualize who these people are. I have such a complete picture of Avi, Shira, Yoshi and Naomi by the end.

106. Long Story Short

This show is my current obsession. It’s so good and no one I know is gonna watch it! Made by the same creator as one of my all-time favorite shows, Bojack Horseman, LSS follows a Jewish-American family with stories told drastically out of order chronologically.

I especially love the guy playing Ilya, the Russian hockey player. He has such a great balance of tough guy act and emotionally vulnerability, and amazing comic timing. I can easily see why this show is blowing up.

When I say it’s yaoi, I don’t just mean that it’s gay. It excels at the kind of baiting that the best ship fics do. Things like how they go from a last name to first name basis. There’s the stock misunderstandings but it’s really now as melodramatic as you might expect, things stay moving.

Full disclosure: I only watched episodes 3-6, and I wasn’t really paying attention to ep 3. A friend recommended this show to my wife and I got sucked in while playing UFO 50 on my Switch. There’s a ton of sex scenes which isn’t ever a draw for me, but the actors are very sincere and heartfelt.

104. Heated Rivalry

Also known as “The Gay Hockey Show”, which truly does perfectly encapsulate what this show is. Based on a book that on turn was inspired by a fanfic, this show full-on plays out like a yaoi anime, just in live-action. And it’s on HBO so they can show a lot of nudity.

Reasonable. I felt weird about that scene after the first time I watched it but I’ve kinda come around on it. Well I’d say WUDM is closer to Knives Out than Glass Onion of that sounds appealing.

Yeah. I don’t have Gyromite or Stack-Up though. Plus there’s some pieces missing here, but I’m gonna start trying to find the rest. Or maybe I can make some recommend parts.

I also really like glass onion for the record. So it’s possible our tastes are just real different for this kind of movie. What have you soured about it out of curiosity?

I’ll say the same thing I said last season: I don’t NEED another season of this, but if it turns out the writers have an idea for more, I’m sure it’ll be great.

but just hanging out with these characters is its own pleasure. Learning more about Gary, Hunter, Fennel, MonoChro, plus a lot of deep cuts and continuity mods from Adventure Time was great. It might not always be what the story needs, but as a longtime fan it’s right up my alley.

It’s also less clear for awhile what the focus of this season will actually be plotwise. At first it seems like it was gonna be another multiversal adventure; there’s a little of that but honestly I’m glad we kept mostly to our main two worlds here. It does kinda lack narrative momentum…

In this case, we get the welcome expansion of Huntress Wizard. She’s awesome and funny and has interesting lore and powers. The series is a slow burn, HW doesn’t even meet Fionna til like EP 3, and they don’t want btwract much til 5 or 6. I didn’t fully buy that they had learned much from each other

103. Fionna and Cake: Season 2

The Adventure Time universe has kept up in quality AND quantity far longer than I expected, love to see it. Following a similar formula as last season, we follow the alt-universe Fionna and Cake alongside one featured character from old AT that we get to know better.

102. Tetris Tumble XL

Played this one with my niece and nephew. Kinda like Giant Jenga, your keep going til the tower falls down. Due to the nature of it, rounds aren’t going to last very long. Which is good because there aren’t a plethora of pieces. It’s a fun game to play with the kids.

He’s like my third favorite I think. Behind Yoshi and Samus.

I gave him a cookie. He doesn’t know what to do with it.
