A Gen Xer on a project to listen to all 500 albums on Rolling Stones 2023 list, rate them, and then re-rank them with others that I think should have been included. The things we do to get through a second Trump administration with sanity partially intact.
409--THE GRATEFUL DEAD: WORKINGMAN'S DEAD (1970)

Well, there is a reason why Uncle Johns Band and Casey Jones are the most famous songs on this album. The rest of the album is unremarkable but pleasant enough.

410--THE BEACH BOYS: WILD HONEY (1967)

This is the Beach Boys album where they decide to do Motown.

They shouldn't have done that .

411--BOB DYLAN: LOVE AND THEFT (2001)

Near peak late stage Dylan. It's not Time out of Mind, but it has some great songs like High Water for Charley Patton.

412--SMOKEY ROBINSON AND THE MIRACLES: GOING TO A GO GO (1965)

Another almost perfect collection of songs, that includes what might be one of the most perfect pop songs ever written (The Tracks of My Tears).

417-- ORNETTE COLEMAN: THE SHAPE OF JAZZ TO COME (1959)

I guess you have to listen to the notes he's NOT playing.

And Belle and Sebastian, but they are not always at their best.

424--BECK: ODELAY (1996)

Just a great mid 90s album. Great mix of genres/sounds and so doesn't overstay its welcome.

It is not even the right size--its fucking hanging over the edge on the top and bottom. Fucking cretin

431--LOS LOBOS:HOW WILL THE WOLF SURVIVE (1984)

Nothing bad about this, but for such a unique band, I think it feels a little middle of the road.

434--PAVEMENT: CROOKED RAIN, CROOKED RAIN (1994)

This is the rare album where the second side is better than the first. At times difficult, at times weirdly catchy.

442--THE WEEKND: BEAUTY BEHIND THE MADNESS (2015)

Hard to take a guy who talks tough but sounds like Michael Jackson. Off putting and mostly stupid.

444--FIONA APPLE:EXTRAORDINARY MACHINE (2005)

This is okay, at times with some, I don't know, Berlin in the Weimar Republic vibes. I think this is essentially an average album.

446--ALICE COLTRANE:JOURNEY IN SATCHIDINADA (1970)

Maybe two interested songs, but most of this sounds like a weird collection of instruments warming up.

448--OTIS REDDING:DICTIONARY OF SOUL (1976)

It doesn't get much better than Otis Redding--except if it's live. But a great document of studio soul.

450--PAUL AND LINDA MCCARTNEY: RAM (1971)

Too many notes, but some good songs and some misses, and good God Admiral Halsey is fruity.

451--ROBERTA FLACK: FIRST TAKE (1969)

Two great jazzy tracks, but sandwiched in between these tracks and also finishing the album is some boring, slow schlock.

453--NINE INCH NAILS: THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL (1994)

"A little ridiculous, but some legitimately good songs, with significant stylistic variations, considering its ""industrial" label.

454--CAN: EGE BAMYASI (1972)

My introduction to Kraut Rock. Weird, very weird, but not awful. I may go back, but not immediately.

Well, this certainly satisfied that criteria. Expect to continue to wrestle with this not very important controversy throughout this journey.

459--KID CUDI:MAN ON THE MOON, THE END OF THE DAY (2009)

This shows that a hip hop album can have songs that sound distinct and be original, and catchy all at once.

But, he could have cut 3 or 4 songs.

464--3 x 3: Isley Brothers (1973)

Sometimes great, but a lot of this headed in the direction of soft rock.

Absolutely searingly awesome guitar driven Nigerian Rock. Great stuff.

466--BLACK UHURU: RED (1981)

Good reggae, although it passed by at times without making too much of an impression.

But its reggae, and reggae of a certain era is almost always delightful.

I do not understand people who disregard the music of Jamaica from 1960-1983.

468--ROLLING STONES: SOME GIRLS (1978)

I always thought this was the Stones' disco album. It's not. Miss You, the hit from this album, is the closest thing on here and it's also the worst song on the album. Otherwise, just a really good Stones album.
