We find large differences in trust levels between countries and population groups. 🌍 For example, in Western countries, conservatives have lower trust in scientists than liberals. However, in most countries, political orientation and trust in scientists are unrelated.

🗣️ 83% of respondents believe that scientists should communicate about science with the public.

📣 49% believe that that scientists should actively advocate for specific policies (23% disagree). 52% believe that scientists should be more involved in the policymaking process (21% disagree).

💡 Across 68 countries, trust in scientists is moderately high (mean trust = 3.62, on a scale from 1 = very low trust to 5 = very high trust), with strong differences across countries.

We investigated the predictors of this trust gap and found that right-leaning and conservative ideologies often predict a stronger negative impact on trust in climate scientists than scientists in general. 4/7

Out of 68 investigated countries, 43 showed lower trust in climate scientists compared to scientists in general, 19 showed no significant difference in trust ratings, and six showed higher trust in climate scientists. 3/7
