We continue to seek other funding sources to integrate into affected programs at CNH, and we are working with other organizations to challenge the lack of settlement supports with federal parties.

We are grateful for this support, but we recognize that there continues to be a gap. In addition to some funding sources being temporary, a handful of services remain closed as of March 31, 2025. This includes employment services, multi-lingual support, and higher-level language instruction classes.

In addition, we continue to receive ongoing funding from the provincial government, which provides one settlement worker and restorative circles.

Within the last two months, we have received assistance from an endowment fund to support youth settlement programs until March 31, 2026. We have also received a subcontract with @mosaicbc.bsky.social to support lower-level language instruction classes until the end of December 2025.

Today, we stood alongside the Association of Neighbourhood Houses of BC (ANHBC), and Frog Hollow, South Vancouver, Mount Pleasant, Little Mountain and Kiwassa neighbourhood houses in our plea. We also heard from newcomers who shared their settlement journeys, ISS of BC, and @jennykwan.bsky.social.

Like many organizations, CNH was surprised by IRCC funding cuts at the end of 2024, only three months before taking effect on April 1, without any transitional planning. CNH lost 100% of funding after providing settlement services for 40 years in a part of Vancouver that many newcomers call home.

We also called on #RachelBendayan, the new minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), as part of a group impacted by federal cuts to settlement services at the end of this month.

MP Jenny Kwan implies that the federal government failed to consider the impact of decreased immigration onto the Canadian GDP and less choices for domestic students as universities close departments.

She emphasizes how policy blame cast on immigrants have led to hate towards ethnic minorities.

“In the last 10 years, these programs have been instrumental in this neighbourhood to building culture and identity, while addressing community needs and bringing people together," says Robert Moya, CNH youth settlement worker.
