Historically, it has been normal for students to move to Toronto, attend Wycliffe full-time and work towards a degree in theology and often ordination, she says. Now, more students are studying part-time and many are commuting from their home communities, she says. Not as many are seeking ordination, but more are looking to deepen their theological understanding and share the results with their home church and communities through their regular faith lives, not necessarily in professional roles, she says. Statistics suggest this is happening in seminaries across North America, she adds—so colleges that still want close-knit communities will need to think about how to form bonds between students with different goals who are often living father apart than they would have in the past.

This fall, we welcome our largest entering class in six years—145 new students. Applications tell the story: MDiv applications increased by 50 percent, MTS by 51 percent, and ThM by 33 percent. Domestic MDiv applications rose by 20 percent, directly shaping the size of this year’s incoming MDiv class. The most dramatic growth has come in the MA-Hybrid program, which has doubled in enrollment since last year. More than three-quarters of these new students are students of color, and many bring professional experience from law, journalism, higher education, finance, and beyond. Their presence broadens our reach and enriches our collective life of study and service.

the beginning of a question posed to a couple of my dutch theologian friends
I had a question for you about Miskotte's book Edda and Torah. In view of the current political situation in the US, my thoughts have been turning to this odd comparative work. I am thinking about trying to write an article or chapter, or both, addressing it to the recent English-language phenomenon of "theological interpretation of scripture." I am concerned that this "movement" has taken a somewhat sectarian turn: it seeks to "relocate" the practice of biblical interpretation "back" inside of the church---to dethrone historical criticism as the arbiter of right exegesis. In this way, if subtly, it plays into the "alternative facts" of MAGA: the idea or impression that there is no more public square, no more shared deliberation, only the exercise of power and a multiverse of inadjudicable intellectual options.

At this point Westermann introduces a distinction which is of crucial importance for his interpretation of the whole Bible, namely, that between deliverance (Rettung) and blessing (Segen): From the beginning to the end of the biblical story, God's two ways of dealing with mankind—deliverance and blessing—are found together. They cannot be reduced to a single concept because, for one reason, they are experienced differently. Deliverance is experienced in events that represent God's intervention. Blessing is a continuing activity of God that is either present or not present. It cannot be experienced in an event any more than can growth or motivation or a decline of strength

There were times when you could not understand God anymore. You had to speak against God. Then I saw that this was what really happens in the Psalms and in Job. Out of this I learned the difference between petition and lament.. . . In Russian prison camp one time we stood in a circle to have a worship service. One of us was asked to pray. He read Psalm 103. We were standing with our heads bowed, stooped over. But afterward I thought, "That's not the way to praise God! Such a psalm has to be spoken with joy, your head raised, your body erect!" In that experience I learned the difference between real praise and our notion of prayer. Then I began my dissertation, writing on a little board, sometimes trading bread for paper. It was then that I discovered that the psalms of the Old Testament really come out of human experience.

The council argues that the bill assumes the primary reason one chooses a degree program is because it maximizes income. For the Christian, there are higher goods than money, including service and care for those in need. Paul makes this point in the very letter that Mr. Johnson quoted. The apostle said, “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor. ” Following this example, the argument goes, Christians have rejected higher-paying jobs to serve in impoverished areas. Christians also often go into social work and the nonprofit sector. The idea that Christian colleges might be punished for encouraging their students to follow in the example of Christ while rewarding colleges that do not is deeply troubling.

Dr. Brennan Breed, MDiv ’06, appointed as Associate Professor of Old Testament (with tenure), joins us from Columbia Theological Seminary. A celebrated teacher and scholar of reception history, Dr. Breed is completing a two-volume work on sapiential literature in early Hellenistic Judea and Egypt—research that bridges ancient wisdom and contemporary witness.  Dr. Mahri Leonard-Fleckman, appointed as Associate Professor of Old Testament (with tenure), joins us from the College of the Holy Cross. A specialist in the languages, religions, and histories of first-millennium BCE Israel, Syria, and Iraq, her work offers critical insight into the social and political world of the Hebrew Bible.

Babies enjoy life Babies laugh much more than adults do. One mum recorded over 500 separate laughs in one day from her twin boys and many parents have told us about hearing their children laugh in their sleep. This shows us, in very simple terms, that they are enjoying their life as a baby.
